Bredager School Bathrooms Project

school bathroom Renovations in school - Stern Engineering Touchless Faucets, Automatic Soap Dispensers, Hand Dryers, Flush Valves for Urinals and Toilets & Bathroom Accessories

Background: Green Renovations at a Danish School Bathroom

Climate change has increased pressure on natural water resources and in turn many organizations have implemented policies aimed at water conservation. It is widely known that consumers can have a huge impact on water efficiency by making small behavioral changes to reduce water wastage and by choosing more water efficient products.

About the Customer:

Breding School is located in the historical village of Jelling in Southern Denmark. The school was originally built in 1974 and today around 800 students study within its walls. In early 2017 Breding School decided to plan and eventually undertake complete washroom renovations. They also made a decision to take on board water conservation issues by incorporating green building policies and guidelines into these plans, to create a complete touchless bathroom environment.

Key Challenges:

Sanitary facilities in the school consist of 60 lavatory compartments and washrooms complete with fixtures including manual hand faucets. The school has struggled to stay within its utility budget due to large amounts of wasted water, much of which has been a result of student vandalism. Cross contamination is also rife, resulting in many hours of lost study time due to sickness.

Solution Implementation:

In a test environment, school bathrooms water consumption was measured for 40 days with the original manual faucets, made with 10mm copper tubing. In parallel, water consumption was also measured for 40 days with the newly installed Smart 1000B energy-saving sensor faucets, made of solid brass, complete with mixer valve to adjust water temperature and preset auto stop function.

Measurable Results:

The Smart 1000B faucets saved greatly on total water consumption, and more specifically, hot water consumption. The premixed option provided water at a set temperature. With no physical contact necessary by the user cross contamination was drastically reduced and therefore so was lost study time due to sickness. In addition, vandalism was almost eradicated since the auto stop feature did not allow for the faucets to be left on, as previously occurred. The Smart 1000B unique magnet solenoid valves were adjusted to release only 1.3l/min which is estimated to equate to annual savings of thousands of dollars to Breding School in Denmark.
