Background:

Upper Hill is the high end financial and commercial district of Nairobi, the capital and largest city of Kenya. The district has seen an increase in major construction in recent years, specifically major skyscraper constructions. Several multinational corporations have set up offices in the area, these include insurance companies, banks, multinational hotel chains and other private investors who are all contributing to the gradual rise of upper hill skyline.

About the Customer:

Britam Tower is the newest and tallest landmark office project in Upper Hill, Nairobi, and with 32 floors it stands at 200m (660ft) high. The building serves as the regional headquarters of Britam Holdings Ltd., a financial services group listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange that offers financial products and services in insurance, asset management, property, and banking throughout East and Central Africa. Britam Tower also rents a total of 31,500m2 of commercial office space to large local and international companies covering this region.

Key Challenges:

Construction designers have used impressive combinations of steel, glass, wood and marble, making it an exciting addition to the innovative landscape of the city. A major issue that needed to be addressed by both the construction and design teams was finding a solution that would allow for concealed installation and yet remain in line with the extremely high design standards while ensuring unmatched levels of water conservation, hygiene protection and convenience.

Solution Implementation: Touch free faucets for office bathrooms

Britam Tower was constructed using cutting edge contemporary interior design, utilizing advanced wind turbines that generate power to parts of the building as part of their energy conservation efforts. All washrooms on each floor of this premium office building have been fitted with over 500 units in total of Stern Tubular electronic wall mounted faucets as well as Stern Jupiter 2040 concealed electronic flush valves for urinals, which have been installed in each of the men’s washrooms.

Measurable Results:

Stern Tubular faucets were chosen in line with the minimalist design features of the project. They are also compatible with the installation type requirements and by automatically shutting off when the user removes their hands from with the sensor range water consumption has also been drastically reduced.
The touch free electronic features of the Tubular faucet ensures no physical contact whatsoever with the faucet while the user is washing their hands which protects users from any cross contamination by germs that may have been left on the sanitary facilities and remain between maintenance visits.
The Jupiter 2040 concealed electronic flush valves in the men’s washrooms are the perfect fit for the strict minimalist design requirements. They are also operated by IR sensor which means that once again, no physical contact whatsoever with the urinal is necessary for protection from cross contamination.
In addition, in an effort to maximize hygiene the Jupiter 2040 is equipped with a 24 hour duty flush which actually prevents the trap seal from drying out and in addition gets rid of the potential bacteria created by standing water in between regular flushes when the washroom is unused.
Many of the sensor settings in both products mentioned are customizable by remote control providing maintenance staff and management with full control over water flow, water temperature and water consumption for cost effective and ecologically sound results.
